Baiyun Mountain

Pearl River

Our day at Baiyun Mountain! What a story! Troy, a Canadian intern at the office we were working at in Guangzhou, gave us the heads up that we should check out Baiyun mountain. So as two French people lost in the translation…we dove on in. First, we had a walk in the park, wanting to have a look at the Fruit garden. There is a waterfall, not natural one, Chinese landscapers, security staffs and some visitors were trying to catch all the fish from one of the pool. When we went one of the lakes was empty because landscapers were organizing a new area. This was quite fun to see hundreds of fishes jumping on the ground and all theses Chinese guys trying to catch them with a net. This comical experience got our blood pumping and we though we would take a stab at climbing to the peak of Baiyun mountain. You cannot imagine how hard is is to make a woman understand what we were asking her.  We did all kinds of things, like how her the form of the mountain with our hands and tried to pronounce the name a hundred different ways. Adventually she understood and we were on our way, easy right….Guess what? That was just the beginning. Once paid the 5 Yuan to get on the mountain, we were off to the top. We walked through the woods, seeing waterfalls and a huge number of trees, we climbed up miles of stairs, we definitely don t even know how many we did, but we are sure we did almost a million steps. After hours of walking, a few stops and one bad moment -when I wanted to give up and turn around- we arrived on the top. There are some monuments but the best thing is the view, unbelievable, to this day we have never seen a view like this in Asia. On the top you have a lock chain, that s done for lovers who are proposed to lock their love forever.
We asked someone to know what time it was. We saw the walk has lasted 3 hours!!! But it was almost dark and we were still on the top. In sight there was our living area, honestly we were 10 kilometers far from home. In spite of we knew the way back, we decided to ask a young couple how to get a taxi. They were so nice with us and we walked all together on the way back. Anyways, we all had a walk about 2 hours and they even gave their cards and proposed to help us during our journey in Guangzhou. Due to the fact we were at the other side of the mountain, we decided to go home by taxi.
Our advice: even if you just want to have a walk without spending hours there, don't forget a bottle of water!!!
